I rarely get them but have had them several times in the past few weeks. <br /><br />Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between your vocal cords snaps shut to check the inflow of air and makes the hiccup sound. Irritation of the nerves that extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups.<br /><br />The girl on the news didn't technically have hiccups. I'm not sure of the name, but it's a mental something that occurs and usually happens after a person has strep throat (although most people don't develop it, certainly). It's like a tick or twitch.
